Mardi Gras King Cake

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 packets yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 egg yokes
  • 1 stick of melted butter
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 1/5 tsp salt
  • 4 Cups flour

Filling

  • 3 8 oz packages of Cream Cheese
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3-4 Pralines
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Icing

  • 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup Light Karo Syrup

Instructions

Dough

  1. Combine Milk, Yeast and sugar then add to mixer
  2. Add egg yokes, melted butter Nutmeg and Cinnamon
  3. Mix together until combined
  4. Add flour 1 cup at a time and combine in mixer until kneaded into a dough ball or about 2-3 minutes
  5. Knead by hand for about 7-10 minutes
  6. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel and let rest for 2-3 hours or until it doubles in size.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 3 feet long and 6" wide
  8. Add filling, leaving about 1" on all sides
  9. Fold and pinch dough to seal in the filling
  10. Shape into a circle
  11. Proof for 45 minutes to one hour
  12. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes until brown
  13. Let cool then decorate with icing
  14. EAT!

Filling

  1. Bring cream cheese to room temperature
  2. Crush pralines
  3. Combine ingredients

Icing

  1. Combine ingredients until the correct consistency
  2. Add 2-4 drops of food coloring then stir
